Jamin Torres, fitness coordinator for the FCHC, said, “We have classes set up that people can join in schools, churches and community centers in the three counties. We have personal trainers at the fitness centers who will work with members and design exercise programs for them.
“We have two water-based classes — aquatic aerobics and aquatic arthritis classes,” he explained. “We have a pool at our rehab center in Wauseon and we use the pool at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold. We have treadmills, stationary bicycles and other fitness equipment.”
The FCHC, Fulton County Health Department and Ohio State University Extension conducted a weight-loss and physical activity contest this year from February to June 1. Called “2010 Be Healthy Now,” the contest had 369 people enrolled. About 7,502 hours of physical activity were logged and participants lost 704.8 pounds. Many participants reported lowering their blood pressure and blood sugar levels and meeting personal goals.
Community Memorial Hospital in Hicksville sponsored a Biggest Loser contest starting in early February and ending on June 5. The goal of the contest this year was to promote a more healthy approach to losing weight and help the participants change their lifestyles to healthier ones so weight loss would become permanent.
The final contest results were: 187 people participating with 1,444.4 pounds lost. A total of $1,800 was given out in prize money to the winners.
In Paulding County, while not many formal exercise classes are offered by the hospital, the hospital’s fitness center is open to the public for a nominal fee. Hospital spokesman Brenda Wieland also said consultations are available with the hospital’s registered dietitian for a low fee.
